Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical business hotel. The lobby has this understated elegance that feels authentically luxurious without being flashy — marble floors that actually gleam, not the fake polished stuff you see everywhere. I mean, this is a five-star property, so expectations are high, but they’ve managed to create something that feels both grand and welcoming. The staff genuinely seems happy to see you, which honestly makes all the difference when you’re dealing with jet lag.
Prime Hangzhou Location
The location on Lishui Road in Gongshu District is actually brilliant — you’re close enough to Hangzhou’s main attractions without being stuck in the tourist chaos. What I love is that couples consistently rate this spot highly, and I get why. You can easily reach West Lake (which, let’s be honest, is why most people come to Hangzhou), but you’re also near some fantastic local restaurants that tourists never find. The area has this nice mix of modern development and traditional neighborhoods, so you get a real feel for the city.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was spacious by Chinese hotel standards — and I’ve stayed in plenty. Floor-to-ceiling windows give you proper city views, not some courtyard nonsense. The bed is genuinely comfortable (you know how hit-or-miss hotel beds can be), and the bathroom has one of those rainfall showers that actually works well. Little touches matter here: the minibar isn’t ridiculously overpriced, there’s plenty of outlets for your devices, and the air conditioning is quiet enough that you’ll actually sleep.
Dining and Amenities
Breakfast is buffet-style, which normally makes me skeptical, but they do it right here. Fresh fruit that’s actually ripe, proper coffee (not that instant stuff), and a good mix of Western and Chinese options. The restaurant serves solid Hangzhou cuisine if you want to try local specialties without venturing out on your first night. There’s also a spa that’s worth mentioning — nothing too fancy, but the massage therapists know what they’re doing. Oh, and parking is free, which is honestly rare for luxury hotels in major Chinese cities.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s what really sets this place apart: the service feels personal without being intrusive. Staff remembers your preferences after a day or two, and they’re genuinely helpful with local recommendations. The hotel strikes that perfect balance between international luxury standards and local character — you’re not staying in some generic chain that could be anywhere. Recent guests consistently rate the location highly, and after spending time here, I understand the appeal. It’s one of those places where everything just works smoothly, from check-in to departure, which honestly is what you want when you’re exploring a new city.

Truly the best hotel of my China trip. Would definitely staff again. – Alicia from Singapore – 13 June 2025 (10/10)
Excellent design, great gym and pool, extremely attentive staff
What could be improved: A little further outHad the best stay! Location is good, great service from staff and comfy spacious room! – Stephanie from United States – 13 June 2025 (9/10)
Hotel room was amazing, spacious, clean, decorated with taste and so comfortable. Love the in-room tub that I can enjoy a hot soak at the end of day. The hotel staff were the most helpful as I was a solo traveller and they gladly assisted me with my luggage courier when I delivered them from another city a day before my check-in. Check-in process was smooth and so was check out. They even accommodated a late check out for me on my last day. Location of the hotel is satisfactory (about 30 mins drive from Xihu) and next to a mall a well to give that quick access for food and anything you need on a pinch.
What could be improved: Nothing ◡̈This was my first experience staying at the Kempinski hotel and definitely not my last. – Shulamit from South Africa – 11 June 2025 (10/10)
Magnificent, spotlessly clean and very comfortable accommodation. Beautiful gardens too! The hotel is a short walk from a great shopping centre which is also very convenient.
What could be improved: Loved everything! No complaints.Overall enjoyable stay! – Bessie from Singapore – 7 May 2025 (9/10)
The standing bath water drainage is not good.
Water flowed to bath tub area, making it slippery prone to falling and slipping. Pls improve.
What could be improved: The standing bath area.Fantastic – Winnie from Hong Kong – 22 April 2025 (10/10)
The décor is great and comfortable, and the location offers convenient access to restaurants and a shopping center. There is an excellent massage parlour right next to the hotel. Although it's slightly further from the main city area, I find it perfectly fine as it allows me to avoid crowds.
Lovely hotel with a great location – Rob from United Kingdom – 28 March 2025 (8/10)
Breakfast was v good. Room was very comfortable.
What could be improved: The bar was closed at 20.30. I thought this was a shame, as the hotel is so nice. They dont really cater for european people. The floor in the room was water damaged. We were encouraged to upgrade a better room( bigger, with canal view room) it was over priced. – Mary from United States – 10 March 2025 (9/10)
The view, and the food very comfortable bed.
Good memories in hotel – Kyung from South Korea – 25 February 2025 (9/10)
