Shangri-La Hangzhou – The back garden of West Lake Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Shangri-La Hangzhou – The back garden of West Lake, you immediately understand why this place has such a devoted following. The lobby feels more like entering a sophisticated private residence than a typical hotel — there’s this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard to impress. What really struck me was how they’ve managed to create this sense of tranquility right in the heart of Hangzhou, which honestly can get pretty hectic during peak tourist season.
The Unbeatable Location
Here’s the thing about staying on Beishan Road — you’re literally steps away from West Lake’s most photogenic spots, but you’re also positioned where locals actually hang out. I mean, couples consistently rate this location a 9.4 out of 10, and after spending time here, I get it completely. You can walk to the Broken Bridge in about five minutes, but more importantly, you’re close enough to those early morning tai chi sessions by the water that make Hangzhou so special. The parking situation is actually fantastic too — they offer free private spots, which is pretty rare for this area.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this perfect balance of modern comfort and subtle Chinese design elements. What I loved most was the view — depending on which side you’re on, you’ll either see the lake or the lush gardens that give this five-star property its “back garden” nickname. The bathrooms are spacious (always a plus), and honestly, the bed was one of those where you actually look forward to going to sleep. Small detail, but the blackout curtains work perfectly, which matters when you’re dealing with jet lag.
Dining and Amenities
Breakfast here is where they really shine — the buffet setup includes everything from perfectly executed dim sum to Western classics, plus this amazing congee station that I kept coming back to. The Asian options feel authentic rather than tourist-friendly versions, which you don’t always find at international hotels. The restaurant spaces have these gorgeous lake views, and the service strikes that sweet spot between attentive and giving you space to enjoy your meal. There’s also a spa that’s worth mentioning — it’s not huge, but the treatments incorporate local tea elements that feel genuinely connected to the region.
Why Guests Love It
What sets this place apart isn’t just the prime West Lake location (though that 9.3 location rating speaks for itself) — it’s how they’ve created this oasis feeling without isolating you from the city. You know what I mean? You can step outside and immediately be part of Hangzhou’s rhythm, whether that’s evening strolls around the lake or grabbing authentic street food nearby. The staff genuinely seems to understand that travelers want insider knowledge, not just generic recommendations. Plus, for couples especially, there’s something romantic about having West Lake as your backyard while still enjoying all the luxury amenities you’d expect from Shangri-La.

Reviews of Shangri-La Hangzhou – The back garden of West Lake
Very good – Man from Hong Kong – 19 October 2025 (8/10)
The room offers a wonderful view of the scenic West Lake. The staff members are very helpful. In particular, I wish to give my compliments to the amiable staff members of the lounge and restaurant.
What could be improved: Hangzhou is renowned for the tidal bore of Qiantang River. I think all visitors to Hangzhou should have watching the tidal bore on their agenda. Being the first time visitor to Hangzhou, I am no exception. But when I asked a male staff member at the reception counter of the hotel (10:05pm on 9 Oct) about the information on the tidal bore, that staff member simply and bluntly replied having no information in hand without offering any hint or other advice.
I am not sure if the manner of that staff member only reflected his own problem, having nothing to do with the overall training staff of the hotel.
Look forward to a better experience for my next visit to the hotel.Nice but wouldn’t have paid the premium – Nicole from Malaysia – 10 July 2025 (7/10)
It was near the lake
What could be improved: They sold it as a room with lake view but I never saw the lake from my room! And I paid a premium!Excellent Location Very Atmospheric hotel – Elsi from Greece – 28 April 2025 (9/10)
The location of the hotel is unique!! Also this is a historical building with beautiful atmosphere and surroundings. The room they gave us was huge with high ceilings and beautiful windows looking at the lake. I hope to return soon
What could be improved: it is a little outdated but to be honest for me it was a plus!! the place has character!West lake trip – Wendy from Singapore – 23 February 2025 (9/10)
Staff was helpful. I was trying to organise a birthday party for one of the group. Came out quite well.

What could be improved: DinnerLovely stay at a grand old hotel surrounded by the beauty of West Lake. – Kit from Singapore – 27 June 2024 (9/10)
The location is very good, almost next to West Lake where we took morning walks. Nearby there are eateries and convenience shops. The staff were very helpful to advise on places of interest and how to get there.
What could be improved: The housekeeping service is a bit inconsistent as same request made by me and another member had different responses. But this is minor issue.Beautiful one night stay – Wilson from United States – 17 June 2024 (9/10)
The hotel deco was beautiful and the location was good
What could be improved: Nothing that we don't likeSuperb – Yazhen from United States – 27 May 2024 (9/10)
Walking distance to the west lake, 白堤和苏堤。The staff is very helpful calling didi or taxi for us.
What could be improved: Not many choices of restaurants in the walking distance.Very good – John from United States – 23 April 2024 (8/10)

What could be improved: The gym snd pool was under constructionBest location for enjoying the West Lake – W from Canada – 1 November 2023 (9/10)
For those who like to walk into the most beautiful West Lake lakeside parks, there is no other hotel in Hangzhou that has a better location than this one. The staff, especially the reception staff are very friendly and helpful. Buffet breakfast is great.
What could be improved: The food in the third floor restaurant is not quiet up to the Shangri-La standards.
